For many pilots, the transition from a single-engine aircraft to a multi-engine twin is one of the most exciting milestones in their aviation journey. It represents a significant step up in complexity, speed, and capability. Whether you are aiming for a career at the airlines or simply want the added safety and performance of a second engine, multi-engine training in Florida offers the perfect environment to reach your goals.

At Sun City Aviation Academy, we’ve designed our multi-engine program around one of the most respected trainers in the industry: the Beechcraft Duchess.

The Beechcraft Duchess: A Superior Training Platform

When you begin your multi-engine add-on, you want an aircraft that is stable, reliable, and equipped with the technology you’ll find in professional cockpits. The Beechcraft Duchess (BE-76) is specifically designed to be an ideal transition aircraft.

One of the most significant advantages of the Duchess is that it features counter-rotating engines. Unlike many light twins where both propellers rotate in the same direction, the Duchess has engines that rotate toward the fuselage. This eliminates the “critical engine” factor, meaning the aircraft handles predictably even during simulated engine-out procedures.

Our Duchess fleet is equipped with modern technology to ensure you are training for the future of aviation:

  • Dual Garmin G5 Electronic Flight Displays
  • Touch Screen Garmin GTN 750xi
  • Stable T-Tail Design for consistent handling throughout the flight envelope

Why Multi-Engine Time Matters for Your Career

If your goal is to fly for a major airline or a corporate flight department, multi-engine time is a non-negotiable requirement. Airlines value pilots who have demonstrated proficiency in handling complex systems and managing the workload of a multi-engine cockpit.

Earning your multi-engine rating is just the first step. For many career-track pilots, the real challenge is multi-engine time building. Many professional roles require a minimum amount of multi-engine PIC (Pilot-in-Command) time that exceeds what you earn during your initial rating. At Sun City, we provide the environment you need to bridge that gap efficiently.

The South Florida Advantage for Time Building

Choosing where to build your multi-engine hours is just as important as the aircraft you fly. South Florida offers a unique classroom that prepares you for the professional world:

  1. Year-Round Flying: Our climate allows for consistent flying throughout the year, meaning you can accumulate hours quickly without being sidelined by winter weather for months at a time.
  2. Complex Airspace Exposure: Training out of Hollywood North Perry Airport (KHWO) places you near some of the busiest terminal airspace in the country. Talking to ATC and navigating Class B and C airspace becomes second nature.
  3. Diverse Training Routes: From over-water transitions to busy island hopping, South Florida provides diverse scenarios that build real-world PIC confidence.

Path to Your Multi-Engine Rating

To be eligible for a multi-engine add-on, you must already hold a Private or Commercial Pilot Certificate and a valid FAA medical. The training is focused on mastering the systems, performance, and emergency procedures unique to multi-engine flight.

Sun City’s program information indicates that most students can complete their multi-engine add-on in approximately 10 to 15 flight hours. The course culminates in a practical test (checkride) with an FAA examiner, where you will demonstrate your ability to manage the aircraft safely under all conditions, including simulated engine failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Beechcraft Duchess have a critical engine? No. Because the engines are counter-rotating, the aerodynamic forces are balanced on both sides, which simplifies handling during engine-out training compared to conventional twins.

How much does a multi-engine rating cost? Sun City’s current repo data lists the multi-engine add-on between $4,100 and $6,100, depending on your individual proficiency and the number of hours required to meet the practical test standards.

Is multi-engine training part of the Part 141 program? While we are an FAA Part 141 Certified Flight School, the multi-engine rating is typically an optional add-on and is not included in the standard Part 141 program cost.

How long does it take to build multi-engine hours? With South Florida’s favorable weather and our reliable fleet, pilots can often build 25 to 50 hours of multi-engine time in a matter of weeks by flying consistently.
